Electrolysis is one of our most popular hair removal treatments here at Your Beauty, Laser & Spa and was invented in 1985 by an opthamologist to remove ingrown eyelashes and has a long history of being reliable, safe and permanent. Today it is still being performed by health professionals all over the world to effectively remove all hair types and colours from the face and body. It is the only proven method of hair removal that has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to be permanent and effectively remove all hair types and colours from the face and body.

Chris has had 30 years experience in this method of permanent hair removal and understands what it’s like to feel embarrassed about unwanted hair.

Electrolysis removes individual hairs from the face or body, where a sterile, tiny probe is inserted down the hair follicle (which is like a little pocket in the skin), to where the hair grows from and at Your Beauty, uses a special heat and chemical reaction to destroy the cells that cause the hair to grow. After 130 years electrolysis still remains the only 100% effective method of permanent hair removal. Our method of treatment is known as “progressive blend technique”. Using the best equipment available along with this method of treatment allows us to work with two types of electrical current and two hands working together to progressively test the hair which is gentler on the skin and provides greater results.

Electrolysis is a treatment that requires time and patience and persistence. Although proven to be permanent, results do vary with every individual. Age, area of treatment, gender and hormonal imbalances as well as medication may all be contributing factors to the re-growth of future hairs, unfortunately we have no control of the hormonal changes that may occur in our body which can stimulate courser hairs to grow. Chris has treated 100’s of people successfully over the years and as she offers a comprehensive range of hair removal options including electrolysis, laser and Intense Pulsed light you are guaranteed to get honest advise as to which modality will suit your concerns best along with realistic expectations. f you’re feeling nervous please be assured we are here to help and have likely treated others with the same issue many times before.

Treatment time depends on the area being treated and the amount of hair present, hair on the chin for example may take anywhere from 5-25 minutes. Treatment may be performed no more often than fortnightly to target hair as it is growing through and a minute gap is left between hairs that are treated to allow for healing.

Lasers or Intense Pulse Light (IPL) systems only work on darker hair types, Electrolysis works on all hair colours and types. It can treat grey, white, red, blonde and brown (dark/light) hair very effectively.

All these treatments are extremely effective in achieving long term permanent reduction and are similar in the way the growth centre of the hair follicle is targeted.

IPL or Laser are ideal for large areas of condensed dark hair, whilst electrolysis is ideal for lighter hair colours or scattered growth. With a thorough assessment we will advise on the most effective technology and treatment plan providing you with realistic expectations and honest advice about how together we can achieve long term results.

The most common area of concern is facial hormonal hair. Hormonal imbalances play a significant role in the growth of facial hair where age, gender and medication are the result of this alteration. Although a constant battle that we are having to deal with when it comes to facial hair, we are able to achieve great outcomes for your treatments with guidance and a solid treatment plan.

PCOS induced hormone imbalances causing Hirsutism (male pattern hair growth in a female) can be treated, however the growth of darker hair never goes away. Chris understands how important having the freedom from unwanted hair removed is.

Electrolysis has unfairly had a bad ‘wrap’ often by companies wishing to sell the ‘latest’ hair removal equipment, however having survived the test of time, (rest assured though that techniques and equipment have certainly improved over 130 years), it is still much in demand, so that many people can’t be wrong.

You may feel a slight “sting” like sensation with each follicle being treated, and your skin may feel warm afterwards. Some areas of the body such as upper lip and bikini lines can be more sensitive that others.

In most cases, clients tolerate the treatment well and will often say “Is that it!” Chris uses the progressive blend technique which is gentler on the skin whilst providing best results and always provides a test treatment of a few hairs so you can assess for yourself before committing to a treatment.

  • Do not wax treatment area at least 2 weeks prior to treatment.
  • When you arrive for your treatment the hair needs to be at 1mm or longer so do not shave or use depilatory creams few days prior to your treatment.
  • You may cut long hair short with scissors or if a condensed area you can shave.
  • Avoid laser /IPL hair removal and skin peels 2 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Electrolysis treatments cannot proceed should you have a cold sore, please advise in advance to your appointment should you have one.

There are no permanent side effects of electrolysis, only some temporary redness and slight swelling immediately following treatment. These side effects subside within minutes to a couple of days. We recommend a skin coloured antiseptic cream that we have available for purchase $15 be applied morning and night for 3 days post treatment.

It is mandatory that you keep the treated area clean and bacteria free. Avoid any excessive sweating 24 hours post procedure as sweat can cause bacteria to enter into the open follicle and may cause the area to break out or become infected.

  • Avoid picking post treatment as skin is compromised and infections may arise.
  • Avoid make up for 2 days post on the treatment area – use skin coloured antiseptic.
  • Avoid scrubs, use of AHA’s, skin treatments, Laser treatments or any form of facials for 2 weeks post treatment
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for 24hrs.

For two weeks post procedure it is very important that you avoid UV exposure.. The application of an SPF 30 to the treated areas is a must as healing skin becomes photosensitive and may be more prone to develop pigment.

Post procedure, some redness and swelling can occur. This generally can last from as little as 2 hours to anything up to 3 days. If you experience any discomfort during this period you may apply a cold compress or alternatively an ice pack to the area. However, if you continue to experience any discomfort please notify your clinician immediately.

A 15 minute  LED light therapy session post any facial electrolysis treatment is a great add on not only beneficial in helping to reduce inflammation, redness and swelling, but also it will speed the skin’s healing and improving its overall strength and clarity.

IPL Permanent Hair Reduction

Permanent Hair Reduction is achieved over a number of sessions depending on the individual. Pulsed-light systems emit pulses of intense lamp-light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat disabling the follicular cells responsible for growing new hair. Any area of the body, except the eyebrows can be treated, offering you comfortable hair management.

Welcome to your beauty IPL and laser hair removal treatments. Please feel confident that you have chosen the right place with Superior medical grade equipment in the Cutera Zeo IPL/laser machine along with the most experienced and qualified therapists in the region.

Our CUTERA XEO Laser is a medical-grade, non-invasive light-based laser device treatment.

The treatments are medical grade and have very minimal to no downtime, making it a safe and comfortable treatment to ensure clinical outcomes.

Prices vary according to the area, please ask your IPL therapist for a consultation and test patch. Cost is $40.

These treatments work when I special hand piece is placed on the skin, the light is triggered and this specialised light travels down through the skin to the hair where melanin attracts the light, heat is created within the hair follicle and the structures that grow the hair are destroyed.

We can never promise to remove every last hair with IPL or laser although in the 20 years of performing these treatments we have seen this happen. We can offer significant hair reduction whilst hair remaining is generally finer and less noticeable. A very small percentage about 0.01% of people unfortunately do not notice changes in their hair growth pattern, as with any treatments or medications some things do not work as well for some as others. For these people we can offer electrolysis which is permanent hair removal.

Because of the way IPL or laser works it needs to have a hair in the follicle to work. Do not wax or pluck the hair in the treatment area for approximately 4 weeks prior to your first treatment test patch excluded.

To get the best results from your IPL/laser winter treatment the dark hair needs to be shaved so none remains on the surface of the skin. You want the light energy under the skin where the hair grows from and by leaving hair on the surface it is wasting the light energy.  By shaving you are not growing new hairs the hair that has been shaved just looks coarse up but this will be treated by the IPL/laser treatment.

No not really, some people relate it to a light elastic band flick, others find it very comfortable to have done. Our Cutera machine is engineered to be as smooth as possible including a chilled handpiece for comfort and safety. We always do a test patch first so you can see for yourself. Generally people are pleasantly surprised.

It is extremely important to not change the colour of your skin whilst undergoing IPL/laser treatments. The melanin that gives you a tan attracts the IPL light and creates heat at the surface of your skin which could create a burn. It is important to avoid Sun for 4-6 weeks prior to your treatment and fake tan products for 12 to 14 days. Plus sunblock should be worn when you are at doors and put reapplied during the day along with a wide brimmed hat. You must inform your therapist if you have been exposed to sun or fake tan during the exclusion time.

The hair has three main stages of growth – Anagen, Catagen and Telogen, think of these as baby stage, middle age and old age stage. A hair in the Anagen stage has lots of water in it, add heat from the IPL/laser to the moisture of the hair and we get a nice steaming effect. Just like heating water when you’re cooking. In the other two stages of hair growth the hair does not contain the amount of water in which to destroy the hair thus the antigen state is the only stage that  IPL or laser can treat  hair permanently because you don’t usually have all the hairs in the antigen stage at the same time (or you would go bald), so several treatments are required to ensure all the hairs are treated in that Anagen stage.

Due to the melanin in the hair absorbing the light Ipl’s or lasers are very limited in being able to treat grey or blonde hair due to the lack of pigment in the hair itself.  Results are also dependent on the cause of the hair growth whether genetic, medications or hormonal changes. All of these changes are internal, whereas we our treating from the outside and cannot remove any contributing factors. Chat with us regarding expectations.

Plan to have 4 to 8 treatments some people need less, some more.  Treatment spacing depends on the area and type of hair growth, face underarm and bikini are generally six weekly whereas backs can be 8 to 12 weeks. It is important for best results to keep up regular treatments to ensure that the hair is treated in the antigen growth stage before it moves into the next cycle of catagen where the hair won’t be treated.

Some medications are photosensitizing meaning your skin can burn more easily when exposed to light, some antibiotics are an example. If you are changing medications, do ask your doctor if they are photosensitizing. Some health conditions are contraindicated to light therapies so inform us of any conditions regarding your health status.

No waxing or plucking at least 4 weeks prior to treatment.

Notify us of any health history or medications you have had or have experienced.

Notify us if you have cold sores in the area to be treated.

Ensure you have avoided the Sun for 4-6 weeks and fake tans for 12 days prior. Wear and reapply sunblock.

Avoid heat such as hot showers, or vigorous exercise for 1-2 days,

Avoid skin irritants such as retinol, benzoyl peroxide, AHAs for a few days after treatments.

Notify Clinic of any concerns.
